Avoca Beach Tennis School
It is my pleasure to be able to present a review of our students to the committee and to be able to quietly boast about the success of our small tennis school. I will review our main tournament players by age - Craig Lumsden, Coach.
Tom Burton (17 years of age)
Outstanding young player, Tom is 17 years of age and has reached the final of the local A grade competition. He is continually a member of the Tuggerah interdistrict team who recently won the Sydney interdistrict. His last tournament was an Australian ranking tournament at Tuggerah where he won the first round of the Open, unfortunately to next be against the number one seed who had previously made the third round of the Australian Open doubles. Tom played with courage and displayed a great variety of strokes against a world class player.
Tom O’Reagan (14 years of age)
Tom is an outstanding junior who recently won Division 3 of the local X point with Ben Ellis another of our juniors. Tom is a left hander who has taken on tournament tennis tenaciously with a trip to Parkes for the Nationals and the Tuggerah Open. Tom received tough draws and played seeded players in Parkes gaining invaluable experience and played in the Open and the 15 years at Tuggerah at the young age of 14 years. Tom is a very talented tennis player who will achieve outstanding results in the future.
Olivia Lynch (14 years)
Olivia is one of the strongest female players with results this year that consisted of the final eight in the state in the 15years and under in CHS and a finalist in some recent Northumberland junior series for 14 years and under, another outstanding tennis talent.
Kate Burton (14 years)
Kate is an outstanding player and one of the most improved juniors in our tennis school. Recently attending the nationals in Parkes and progressing through to the 3rd round of the consolation playing against some of the most experienced players in the state. Katie has being involved with the Tuggerah interdistrict team, No 1 for the school tennis team and recently a semi finalist in the 15 years and under in the Tuggerah Open age championships. We look forward for Katie playing some Open events next year and gaining an Australian ranking.
Ben Ellis (14 Years)
Ben’s enthusiasm for tournaments has been impressive this year. Ben won the Division 3 X point with Tom O’Reagan and played in the nationals at Parkes and the Tuggerah Open Event and the 15years and under. Ben is an excellent athlete making the final 4 in the state for high jump and has an extremely impressive game. He moves well and has a big serve. Ben won many matches in the 15years but unfortunately had the number one seed on his card so came in second unlucky not to make the semi final. Ben will develop into an outstanding player with his tours of Tamworth and Victoria to follow throughout the year.
Jasmine King (11 years)
Jasmine is an outstanding talent and for such a young age has developed into a very successful tennis player. Her tournaments for the year have been numerous and I will highlight some of the most outstanding results. Her recent results in gaining admission into the State titles by becoming a finalist in the Champions of Champions which includes all 12 years and under in the Northumberland region. (Gosford to Newcastle). The state titles will be played in Woy Woy will include only the champions for each region in NSW.
She was the 7th seed in the Little Masters for the under 11’s where she made it through to the final eight losing to the number one seed and final winner of the tournament. Jasmine has played in the Nationals at Parkes winning the first round until playing a seeded player, Finalist for the 12’s at Gosford, Tuggerah and winning Port Stephens and also playing in the 15 years and under at Tuggerah winning many matches. Jasmine at the age of 11 has an Australian ranking which is yet to be published. Jasmine’s family are strong tennis fans and is again venturing to Tamworth for the next tour. Jasmine is hard to beat in any tournament from 12’s to 14 years. An exceptional talent emerging.
Briahna Bessant ( 10 years)
Briahna is another emerging talent from the Avoca Tennis School. Briahna at 10 has taken to tournaments like a duck to water. Her most recent results have been outstanding. Her latest tournament at Lakemba where she made the semi finals of the 12 years doubles and gaining an Australian ranking on the way beating a highly ranked player in the state and making the 3rd round of the consolationation. Briahna is progressing at an exceptional rate, she recently played at the Nationals for the 12’s’s at Parkes and is going to Tamworth to gain more experience. A great fighter on the court, the family is behind her tennis career.
Emma Hughes (10 Years)
Emma has commenced her tournaments coming second in the Brisbane Waster Zone primary schools and venturing down to Parramatta for the Met North titles. Emma played in the champion of champions for the 10 years coming 4 and being part of the invitational squad for a weekend at Cessnock
The concept is to have some fun within the club. If players wish to enter or be taken off the list please contact Craig Lumsden.
Yours in tennis, Craig
